As CEO, John Szold provides succession planning and management services, including CEO assessment, CEO transition, performance evaluation, talent management and leadership development, to boards of directors, senior management teams, as well as owners of private businesses. He applies a systematic approach to all succession decisions, balancing subjective management evaluation with objective performance criteria and third-party assessment.

In designing and installing succession-planning processes, Mr. Szold has helped identify and develop high-potential leaders, and implement effective performance-management processes for a roster of national and international companies.

Mr. Szold founded Planning for Succession drawing on a 30+-year multi-industry career that spanned retail, manufacturing, sales, consulting and university lecturing and was guided by the underlying philosophy, “If it’s not fun, why do it?” His years of experience in the field of organizational development have been driven by the concept that people should enjoy their work and be suited to their jobs.

Prior to establishing the firm, Mr. Szold was managing director of Caliper Canada, leading the almost-half-century psychometric assessment company’s management-consulting practice, which focused on leadership development, succession planning and talent management, in Toronto, for six years.

Mr. Szold also has notable retail management and marketing experience, including having introduced Ben & Jerry’s super-premium ice cream across Canada when he was vice president in charge of the brand for Delicious Alternative Desserts. He developed social marketing partnerships with nonprofit organizations in key Canadian cities and distributed $2 million of in-kind sponsorship funds, as well as designed and implemented corporate-communications, consumer-advertising, and packaging initiatives to appropriately position this international brand to the Canadian market.

When he was vice president of merchandising for the Liquor Control Board of Ontario, he pioneered the development and implementation of new store concepts, display techniques, in-store communication, promotions and assortment management. Through a staff of 85, he directed category management, quality assurance, advertising, market research and pricing.

Mr. Szold is frequently published; most recently, his writings have appeared in Canadian Grocer magazine, Director magazine, Workplace.ca, HR Reporter.com and Canadian HR Reporter.

An adjunct professor at the University of Toronto, Mr. Szold has lectured on health-services marketing to master-degree candidates in health science administration and has supervised field studies in marketing-strategy development at the Faculty of Medicine since 2004.

He is a member of the Institute of Corporate Directors, the National Association of Corporate Directors and the Society of Corporate Secretaries and Governance Professionals. He is Chairman of the Board of the Canadian MedicAlert Foundation.

Mr. Szold holds an MBA (cum laude) and a BBA (magna cum laude) from the Schulich School of Business, where for seven years he taught a range of course in marketing, brand management and corporate strategy to MBA students, for whom he also served as thesis adviser. He also has completed the Institute of Corporate Directors’ Directors Education Program.
